Cyber Threats You Should Know & a Few Tips

Cybercrime – What is it and what can you do?

cybercrime

Cybercrime is a big concern but knowing what it is and how to spot it can help you stay safe.

What is it?

Basically, cybercrime it is the use of a computer, computer network, networked device, and the internet to commit a variety of crimes. Usually things like identity theft, data theft, or cyber extortion. These crimes can be committed by a single person or an organization. The main goal of all cybercrime is profit – they want your money.

How often does it happen?

Oh, about every 39 seconds now-a-days. Seriously. Also, one in five people will have their credit card information stolen this year.

What sort of damages do these crimes cause?

Financial burdens, reputational harm, legal action, layoffs, and more. These crimes can also threaten lives when the target of the attack is a hospital, government agency, or power grid.

Who are the main targets?

Literally everyone and every business out there. Hackers will take whatever they can get.

What types of cybercrime are we talking about?

  • Email and internet fraud.
  • Identity fraud (where personal information is stolen and used).
  • Theft of financial or card payment data.
  • Theft and sale of corporate data.
  • Cyberextortion (demanding money to prevent a threatened attack).
  • Ransomware attacks (a type of cyberextortion).
  • Cryptojacking (where hackers mine cryptocurrency using resources they do not own).
  • Cyberespionage (where hackers access government or company data).

What can you do to try to minimize your risk?

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Keep your software and operating system up to date
  • Regularly use antivirus software and keep that updated as well
  • Use strong and unique passwords
  • Never open attachments in emails that you do not recognize who sent it
  • Do not click on links in emails or on un-trusted websites
  • Do not give out personal information
  • If you receive a suspicious request, contact the company directly (never click links!)
  • Watch what URL you are visiting
  • Keep a close eye on your bank statements

Basically, be diligent! Become a “human firewall” against hackers by thinking carefully before you click links or allow people access to your computer or data.
